Let’s face it, Fort William isn’t renowned for getting the driest of weather. Our spot on the west coast coupled with our rugged terrain and tallest of mountains means that Lochaber does tend to get rather a lot of rainfall throughout the year, but it’s not all bad.
Our water helps power several Hydro-electric schemes throughout Lochaber, from small private schemes to the Rio Tinto Alcan aluminium smelter. The hillsides become a lush green with the thriving vegetation and our rivers and burns spate – the perfect conditions for those that love kayaking in the white water. And because we’re so used to it, you won’t see us succumbing to much flooding… (although not even us can withstand being battered by some of the worst storms, check out this video).
When it is chucking it down though, there’s still plenty to do: You can visit some of our museums and find out about the rich history of Fort William and Lochaber, let the train take the strain and see some of the best scenery in the world on the West Highland line to Mallaig from the comfort of a warm cabin or sample some warming whisky at the Ben Nevis Distillery.
There’s plenty in the way of cosy pubs and restaurants to sit back and enjoy some of our delicious fare and fine ales or if you’re in a hurry get a hearty roast on a roll at the Hot Roast Company.
Wet weather adventurers can get out in the mud with Highland Activities or take to the water with Rockhopper Sea Kayaking.
Don’t forget to check the forecast and our webcams for a live view.
And remember, as “The Big Yin” Billy Connolly says: There's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing, so get yourself a sexy raincoat and live a little.
Take a look at our selection of activities below, our take a browse through the site for some rainy day inspiration.
